Flightglobal. com melaporkan bahawa, 1/3 daripada jet-jet pejuang Soviet jenis MIG 29 telah dihalang untuk melakukan penerbangan pada awal 2009 kerana masalah pengaratan. Pemeriksaan secara besar-besaran ini telah dijalankan berikutan 2 kemalangan yang membabitkan pesawat-pesawat ini dari Rejamen Pesawat Pejuang ke 120 di Wilayah Chita pada bulan November dan Disembar 2009. Daripada 291 buah pesawat yang mereka miliki, pemeriksaan terhadap 190 buah mendapati 90 daripadanya mempunyai masalah pengaratan.

Permeriksaan terhadap kedua-dua pesawat yang terhempas mendapati masalah pengaratan yang teruk pada bahagian sambungan badan pesawat dan "vertical empennage".

Russian MiG-29 fighters resume flights after December crash

MOSCOW, February 4 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian Air Force has resumed flights of MiG-29 Fulcrum fighters, grounded after a December 2008 crash in East Siberia that killed a pilot, a Defense Ministry official said on Wednesday.

The crash was the second in East Siberia involving a MiG-29 fighter in less than two months. In mid-October, a MiG-29 fighter crashed 60 kilometers (37 miles) from the Domna airfield during a regular training flight. The pilot ejected safely.

"We inspected all aircraft of this type after the crash and found traces of corrosion on the tail unit of some of the planes," Lt. Gen. Sergei Bainetov said, adding that tail damage was the most likely cause of December's accident.

"Aircraft with no corrosion were allowed to resume flights," he said. The official said experts were currently attempting to find what caused the corrosion by conducting "artificial aging" experiments with the remains of the tail units of the MiG-29 aircraft that crashed last year. "We will need at least two months to make a conclusive report on the causes of the accident because the experiments are quite complex and lengthy," Bainetov said.

APP: Alarming signals triggered in Indian Air force after the grounding of major chunk of MIGs by Russia due to structural defects as India operates three MiG-29 squadrons along the western front. “We have received no word from Russia. We are continuing to fly our MiG-29s from Halwara and Jamnagar,” Times of India quoting a senior IAF officer said.

Russian has reportedly grounded about 100 MiG-29s out of three hundred in its arsenal by declaring them unsafe to fly during ongoing checks. Algeria had last year returned its 15 MiG-29s to Russia holding that that their quality was poor. The decision to ground them was taken when a couple of them crashed in southern Siberia in October-December due to the disintegration of their tail fins. The India Air Force with its big fleet of MIGs operates over 60 MiG-29s.

“Times of India” reported the Indian Navy is soon to get 16 MiG-29Ks’ the fighter’s naval variant designed to operate from an aircraft carrier’s deck” as part of the original $1.5 billion package deal signed with Russia in 2004 for aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov, Russia is preparing for India. The daily quoting sources said a an Indian navy team recently returned empty-handed from Moscow When Russia postponed the delivery of 16 MiG-29Ks due to grounding of its own MiG-29s.

The IAF is already facing “a huge dip” in the number of its fighter squadrons, down to just 32 from the “sanctioned strength” of 39.5. The IAF had inducted over 70 twin-engined MiG-29s from 1986 onwards but it has lost lost several of them in crashes, though these fighters are not as accident-prone as the single-engined MiG-21s or the recently phased out MiG-23s. The daily said six IAF MiG-29s are currently in Russia for a mid-life upgrade under a huge $964 million contract signed in March 2008.

NEW DELHI, March 14 (Xinhua) -- India's Air Force chief said on Saturday that the country's MiG-29 jet fighters are safe despite Russia' decision to ground a large number of such aircraft due to structural defects, the semi-official Press Trust of India reported.

Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Fali Homi Major said MiG-29s were of various series and he did not know details of what series of aircraft the Russians had grounded, according to the report. He also said that India had carried out checks with its MiG-29 aircraft and found no problem.
